New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021 Highlights

Below are designers and houses which I may have only micro-blogged on in addition to those linked to posts.

In the Spring/Summer 2021 collection, I feel as if Tomo Koizumi has a very clear albeit repetitive motif with this fabric manipulation, but the designer(s) should be conscious of silhouette and the natural waistline in the future- many of the looks do still manage to do so but in the instances in which there is a boxy bulky look to the garments it can be distracting, and the proportions just draw the eye from the more aesthetically pleasing garments, which interestingly have a more appealing color story as well. I would experiment with trimming or creating a smaller scaled effect at the waist. The bridal look was hypnotic, as was the white gown, but the colorful designs have a refreshing youthfulness and playfulness to them.

Tom Ford Spring/Summer 2021 New York Fashion Week NYFW SS21: Kaftans, Afghans, Kimonos, crochet bikinis, a sweat-skirt suit, animal print button-ups, and relaxed fit elastic waistband pants with cable knit sweaters looks like a comfy take on classic American casual sportswear…and I usually hate Americana! It seems as if the menswear utilizes the same unisex separates.

Auric Wear- a Spirituality Lifestyle Brand which infuses spiritualities and beliefs from different religions and cultures because I wanted everyone to feel like it's inclusive- so whether you are a Christian or Catholic, Jewish or are a believer in the Kabbalah, a Yogi, a Witch or Wiccan- there's something for you in this collection.

The biggest news of New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021 is the launch of my 2nd collection ever, Auric Wear- a Spirituality Lifestyle Brand which infuses spiritualities and beliefs from different religions and cultures because I wanted everyone to feel included and represented- so whether you are a Christian or Catholic, Jewish, Islamist, are a believer in the Kabbalah, a Yogi, a Witch or Wiccan- there’s something for you in this collection!

I combined meaningful symbols, sacred geometry, from all of these beliefs with graphics that are all designed by me- they’re combinations of free-hand-sketches and vector art. The entire Auric Wear collection is meant to bring enlightenment to the wearer and everyone he or she interacts with…it’s like being a walking Chakra Therapy billboard, so you’re making a fashion statement that you’ve got Enlightened Style!

While some of the designs do have a witchy alternative edgy vibe, I really pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and used color- and even went beyond my creative style in creating a Native American Print to embody a biblical passage on Ezekiel’s Wheel, for example. I even created an ambigram in the As Above So Below design shown on the cropped hoodie above- and let me tell ya, it wasn’t an easy! Beyond that, it reflects a lifetime of spiritual study, searching for god everywhere and not being afraid to look into other religions and belief systems to do so.

Once I found the chakras, it seemed to connect every culture across time- they somehow relate to Kabbalah, the tarot, astrology, medicine and holistic medicine, yoga, meditation, Kundalini Rising and enlightenment- and upon this discovery, and the knowledge that images and color, patterns and shapes can actually have an effect on the mind, body, and spirit, I set out to create this collection that is Auric Wear.

Bibhu Mohapatra’s Spring/Summer 2021 New York Fashion Week Collection oozed opulence…this bitch earns…errr…owns everything. View my thoughts on the collection in my fashion blog post, Bibhu Mohapatra SS21 NYFW.

Naeem Khan Spring/Summer 2021 New York Fashion Week SS21 NYFW

Naeem Khan Spring/Summer 2021 was glamorous and dramatic with metallic sequins, plunging necklines, long trains, batwing and afghan dresses…and can we discuss the halter and keyhole bodice pant and skirt dress…she sounds confused but this MPD queen is a beauty.

LRS Spring/Summer 2021 did have some unique garments that are worth giving a glance…see the glorious originality in my Fashion Blog Post on LRS Spring/Summer NYFW.

View my Fashion Blog Post, Shirr-Perfection: Polina Gorkovenko Spring 2021, for my thoughts on this original creative capsule, which really was one of the highlights of SS21 NYFW because it showed that even with one fashion construction technique, shirring or gathering, you can create a cohesive, memorable, striking collection.

Another stand-out collection for NYFW SS21 was Private Policy, because the straps and tactical inspired vest inspiration added just the right amount of detail and in the perfect proportion. Except for the striking Birth of Venus graphic prints- everything was monochromatic with a limited palette. View my full Fashion Blog Post on Private Policy Spring 2021.

So How’d New York Fashion Week Spring 2021 Go Overall?

Well…it was a fun bit of fashion escapism during the global pandemic, and while I feel as if the designers, models, producers, crew, and everyone involved did a great job, that’s not to say it went off without a hitch…or a glitch or two- but it was overall a surprisingly fast week perhaps due to much fewer shows than we’re used to seeing.
