Structured, fitted, boned and corsetted garments contrasted flowing romantic frilly ruffled tops, as patent leather and leather juxtaposed chiffon and silk at Prabal Gurung’s Spring/Summer 2018 runway show. White, black, poppy pink, cerulean, wine, plum, taupe, blue, green, yellow, and bold strawberry pink composed the color palette.
Ruffles and frills met with button embellishments; puff sleeves, seams, and straps detailed slip dresses. Boning added sensual structure to jackets, coats, and high-waisted shorts. Modular button-together tops and dresses added sex appeal and versatility. Lady-like puff-sleeved scoop-neck dresses were cut in leather and given high slits. The open-weave and cable knitwear was youthful and refreshing. I didn’t care for the unflattering side-ruffle dresses, nor the granny floral print; I did, however, find the direction and print of the yellow floral dresses to be interesting, but felt like they were missing something or were overdesigned- nonetheless, they were bold and demurely sexy.
The Prabal Gurung SS18 collection was romantic and soft, sleek and sexy, girly and glamorous, and had a perfectly balanced theme of contrast that was executed in the palette, fabric selection and manipulation, and structure.
