The 2017 Met Gala’s theme is Rei Kawakubo, esteemed designer of Comme des Garçons, which really isn’t my cup of tea personally. While I do see the creative talent there, I feel like there isn’t necessarily a coherent, aesthetically pleasing, wearable aspect to Kawakubo’s designs, which are sort of a snow-ball effect of lumps, as if a laundry basket were tossed onto a model without consideration being given to form. Nonetheless, she’s been hailed one of the most influential designers of our time, and it is a very fun theme for the Met Ball 2017.
It’s interesting to see repetitive style mishaps from some, with improvement from the unexpected- I just hate Ashley Graham’s style, and am happy to see Lena Dunham in a gown embodying the theme- posing and all. Interestingly, we see a lot of emulation- not including the Mackie-inspired sheer gowns worn by Jennifer Lopez, Ciara, Beyonce, and now Kylie Jenner- who outshines sisters Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner.

Best Dressed: Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid embraces the theme with an asymmetrical gown that was a glamorously sexy nod to Rei. I would have given it to Rihanna, but decided that while she is the bravest and went for it, Gigi looks glamorous while still serving OTT, whereas Rihanna’s just celebrates the spirit of the designer.
Worst Dressed: Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington, oh Lord the ups and downs- she’s bipolar I swear! What the fuck is this? The wig, the choker, it’s like she’s got a psychotic break of style Multiple Personality Disorder. Kerry- dissociate from your own taste honey…follow the white rabbit down yellow brick road please!
The Good
The Bad
Banana yellow bridesmaids dresses on Jessica Chastain and DVF, a crazy bag lady wearing carpets…the bad was pretty ugly. I did lump the boring safe and drab together with the bad- go big or stay home.
Criteria:
- Translation of the theme: I expect whimsy, interesting cuts and silhouettes, a daring embodiment of the theme.
- Chic or Meek? Risk versus traditional and or safe: This theme has nothing to do with boring mall clothes, prom and bridesmaid dresses!
- Creativity: Was it literally a Comme des Garçons look? Well…only in the case of Rihanna did that work, and the others looked like Gumby.
