Can I be honest? I want Balmain to switch it up next fall in a major way. This is like a three season transition here, and while there have been such glamorous looks, I feel like there isn’t enough of a contrast from SS16 to SS17. The post-Olivier Balmain has gone from edgy and grunge to ornate, ostentatious, glamorous; signature details now include what I call the Faberge egg look, knit-male (chain mail), lamé and metallic elements…motifs have been utilitarian pockets, and military inspiration.
The Balmain Spring/Summer2016 runway show was glamorous, flowing dresses and jumpsuits, cape jacket dresses. The crisscross draping is stunning on the black flowing sheer silk chiffon top, whereas the cut-out effect of the blue and black number seemed to show just a bit too much and was top and bottom heavy in comparison to the bust- had it been cut like an underbust corset to mirror the top and the neckline been changed, it would have been more appropriate and also aesthetically balanced in my opinion….surprise a later dress was! Now, the mirrored boob look? There’s no justification or correcting that mess. The black model in the green jacket was the perfect styling and casting choice. Overall the Balmain SS17 collection was fabulously chic, predictable, subtly 70’s, and elevated on platforms; the rich color palette and continued safari theme are, however, predictable.
