There is a fabulously chic tone to the Gucci Spring/Summer 2017 runway show- seemingly all of the librarian and 70’s looks from the past shows have been leading up to this on-trend collection. Again, some are a little too period costume or should’ve been edited out, but the others are so luxe- the fabric selection, color palette, even the set seems to take us to a different time and space. There was such attention to detail in the garments and accessories themselves, as well as in the styling- a continuation of the oversized glasses, the prints and animal motifs of the garments and bags, platform flats, an abundance of dainty and seemingly multicultural jewelry…and who isn’t addicted to Gucci sunglasses? There were surprises- the studded harness, the spiked denim jacket- and while they were seemingly out of place, they created this perfect juxtaposition of the 70’s mustard and GG geometric print high waisted midi length skirt, for example. If there’s a way to rock the 70’s and make it our own, this is it- spiked platforms, that denim suit- this is the best we’ve seen this throwback look since Cavalli’s last collections. I need those spiked platforms…but like in a serious addiction kind of way.
It is interesting to see how a shift from one creative director to another can change a brand’s aesthetic: at first Frida Giannini, who really transformed the bags and brought about this more hard edged youthful style, and now Alessandro Michele, who’s taken the brand in a very different yet appropriate direction, considering where we are and are headed in fashion. I think that the Gucci SS17 collection was on-trend, retro with just the right amount of edge and moderity, boldly beautyful, ornately glamorous with a 70’s vibe. I feel like a little editing would’ve added to the cohesion of the collection.
