Textured linen, capes, sandals, the saddest jumpsuits, long coats, paper bag waisted pants, unique texudo shirts- Issey Miyake Spring/Summer 2017 Menswear collection was good and bad. I often sing his praises, and his genius is evident in the tailoring and unique details, the lapel cut-out jacket with shawl lapel inside, for example. I wasn’t feeling the prints or the color palette, but alongside the texture of the shirts and pants, they’re obviously referencing the 90’s. WTF? Overalls? Tight overalls? …Not cute. There is this dichotomy to the collection, innovative and cool, retrospective and dorky…the sandals, the overalls, the jumpsuits… The Issey Miyake SS17 menswear collection was hit and miss, but featured original and wearable garments we expect to see from the master himself.
